Sébastien Jaillon is junior group leader at Humanitas Research Hospital, where he leads the Innate immunity in inflammation and cancer Lab, and associate professor of general pathology at Humanitas University.
Prof. Jaillon obtained a PhD in immunology in 2007 from the University of Angers, in France, working at the French Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM). In 2016, he became assistant professor at Humanitas University, in Milan, starting his own independent research line in the laboratory headed by Prof Alberto Mantovani and Prof. Cecilia Garlanda, at Humanitas Research Hospital. In 2021 he became associate professor at Humanitas University and in 2022 junior group leader at Humanitas Research Hospital.
The research activity of Sébastien Jaillon focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in innate immunity and inflammation and their role in health and diseases, including cancer and infectious diseases. In particular, he redefined the role played by neutrophils. Unsung heroes in immunology, neutrophils have long been viewed as short-lived effector cells with activities restricted to the acute inflammatory response and to the elimination of extracellular pathogens. Prof. Jaillon revised this dogma placing the neutrophils as an important player in the activation and regulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses.
He is co-author in 44 PubMed-registered manuscripts (19 as first, last or corresponding authors), including publications in prime journals – such as Cell, Nature, Immunity, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Blood, Nature Review Cancer, Nature Review Immunology – underlining his leadership and contribution in the fields of innate immunity, inflammation and cancer.
Jaillon’s research has been founded by the Italian Association for Cancer Research (Fondazione AIRC), the Italian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. He also received, among others, a post-doctoral Investigator Award from the International Cytokine Society (ICS) and from the Italian Society of Immunology Clinical Immunology and Allergology (SIICA).
