Simone Giaveri

Junior Group Leader

Simone Giaveri is a Junior Group Leader at Humanitas Research Hospital, where he leads the Metabolic Systems Lab. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Biophysics Research Center at Humanitas University.

After earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology from Politecnico di Milano, Giaveri joined the groups of Prof. Stellacci and Prof. Maerkl at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he pursued his PhD at the interface of materials science and cell-free synthetic biology. At EPFL, he contributed to the early development of a nature-inspired approach to polymer recycling using a minimal cell-free transcription–translation system.

After completing his PhD in 2021, Giaveri joined the group of Prof. Erb at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology (MPI-TM). Supported by an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship, he engineered the first cell-free system capable of sustained operation through the interdependence of metabolism and gene expression. This was achieved by integrating and simultaneously operating 53 enzymes originating from all domains of life.
Building on these findings, Giaveri began exploring the potential of bottom-up metabolic systems for therapeutic applications. In 2025, supported by a RiMED Fellowship, he joined the group of Prof. Battaglia at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC).

In 2026, he established the Metabolic Systems Lab at Humanitas Research Hospital, where his group develops programmable cell-free metabolic systems to tackle challenges in human health.
