Sergio Marchini

Head of Unit, Head of Facility

Sergio Marchini is head of the Genomics Core Facility of IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital and Head of Unit at the Cancer Pharmacology Lab. Marchini graduated in Biology at the University of Milan, obtained a degree in Pharmacology at University of Pavia, and received a PhD in Biological Sciences at the Open University.

He has experience in the study of pharmacology and molecular biology of tumors through genomic and transcriptomic technologies. He worked at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri IRCCS as head of the Translational Genomics Unit, where he led research projects about the mechanisms of malignancy and chemoresistance of ovarian cancer. He achieved important results in biomarker discovery for early detection and predictive of response to therapies, with potential important clinical implications.

He joined Humanitas in 2021, where he is currently Head of Unit at the Cancer Pharmacology Lab, guiding a team of wet-lab scientists and bioinformaticians, and Head of the Genomics facility. His research interests include: the field of ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, with the aim of identifying, in both solid and liquid biopsies, biomarkers able to track tumor evolution over time with prognostic and predictive roles; the development of Next Generation Sequencing approaches to characterize the mutational and transcriptional landscape of human biopsies; the application of high throughput transcriptional genomic approaches to characterize, in human biopsies, the mRNA and miRNA landscapes with potential diagnostic and prognostic relevance; the characterization of the molecular determinants of resistance and activity of new promising anticancer agents of natural origin.
